Project #2: A Collection, a Database

Project #2
photo your collection

A landscape on your bureau top,
under a bed,
pinned to the wall,
hanging from your dorm ceiling,
in a closet ...

What's in a collection?
What does a collection say about the person doing the collecting?
What meaning does the context give to the overall Collection narrative?

Project #1
in 3 parts

Part 1:
Photograph your Collection1. Photograph your overall collection in its context. Your collection must include a minimum of four items.

2. Photograph overall collection abstracted from its context.

3. Play with the arrangement of your display to make it the most visual sense.

4. Photograph interesting detail shots (2) that visually denote something of interest of the collection.

Part 2:
Create a wall label with the following:

  1. Name of collection
  2. Collection owner's name
  3. Location of collection
  4. Beginning date of collection (are you still collecting it?)
  5. Consists of #? of objects
  6. How is the collection physically organized? Does the arrangement/installation give further information about the overall collection?
  7. Designer / artist / country of origin
  8. Any other pertinent information that you find important

Part 3:
Create a database itemizing each object

  1. Assign numerical sorting numbers per item #001 and carry on... #100, et al.
  2. Give specific information on each item and include a photograph of each
  3. Include itemized details of each
  4. Include an image of each

Project #1:7 Response: Herb & Dorothy Vogel Documentary

Response #1:7  Following watching the acclaimed documentary on the Vogel's and their collection of Contemporary Art, create a response that is structured around the following : 1. Highlight four items in the film that speaks about their collection thoroughly, and... 2. Compare and contrast to the collections we have seen at both The Joslyn Gage Foundation, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, The Hubbard Collection and Light Work.  One comparative analysis of each, minimum. Student Responses:        Recently in class, we learned that you don't have to be an arts organization to have an impressive art collection. Dorothy and Herb Vogel were once the largest art collectors of New York City. They started out as "wannabe artist" and ended up deciding that collecting was more for them. They have some really amazing work in their collection. Most of their collection is conceptual or minimalistic art. However, there are a few others, such as pop ar...
